It is hard to avoid some collapsing blocks from falling on you and damaging you so medkits or bandages are essential for healing now and then.ĭon't get too attached to your mine because you will mine out the deposit fairly quickly and be moving on. You also probably want some reasonable wepons and armour and some med kits because the auger is gauranteed to encourage passing zombies to dig down into your mine and attack you. This takes a loooong time with a pick and shovel so I wouldn't recommend it until you have an auger. Once you have opened up the extent of the gravel spawn you should simply be able to cut down from elevation 12 to bedrock and take all the ore blocks from amongst the gravel. Wait for it to finish and go back and keep opening the deposit up. Always have an escape route if a collapse starts. Wherever you find a concentrated deposit of the ore you are looking for there is likely to be at least some of at least one other rare ore in or near the same deposit. Your best bet is snow biome for nitrate, burnt biome for coal, forest biome for lead and desert for shale. You can find any of those ores in any biome but it's a hit and miss thing. Rare being lead, coal, nitrate and shale. Iron goes from the surface down to elevation 14 where the 'rare' ores start to spawn. On the map they look like groups of small square grey dots 'one pixel' in size. For iron, find the gravel deposits on the surface in every biome and mine down into it.
